Cuts to Social Security Are Putting Seniors At Risk
Republicans are planning to close most regional Social Security offices. In total, 12% of Social Security staff will be fired, with most of these being frontline workers who help ensure Americans can collect their social security. This means social security payments for some people will be interrupted.
Meanwhile, DOGE operatives are embedded at the Social Security Administration, where they are canceling individual seniors' accounts and sharing private information outside the agency.
Some seniors have had benefits stopped and their bank accounts emptied, and they cannot reach a Social Security employee to fix the problems.
AARP is highly concerned, and has asked its members to call their congressional representatives.
More detailed information is available in a report from the nonpartisan Center on Budget and Policy Priorities titled "Trump Administration, DOGE Activities Risk SSA Operations and Security of Personal Data"
Congress could undo the cuts, reopen the local offices, hire enough workers to handle the call volume, and kick DOGE out of the Social Security Administration
What can you do? Call your Congressional representatives and ask them to protect Social Security. https://5calls.org makes it easy. And while you're at it, call the AARP at 1-888-687-2277 and ask them to push Congress harder.
If you encounter problems with your own social security benefits, you can try calling your Congressional representatives. Ask to speak with constituent services.
