America Can't Keep a Secret Anymore, and It's Putting All of Us At Risk
Donald Trump's national security team has been using the cell phone app Signal to text about highly confidential information. Signal is not a secure way to transmit that kind of information. In March, National Security Advisor Mike Waltz accidentally added a journalist to a group chat about a bombing operation in Yemen. Targets and tactics and the name of a CIA agent were disclosed.
Anyone with a lower rank would have faced a court martial. Instead, Waltz and one of his deputies left their posts--and Trump immediately made Waltz the United States ambassador to the United Nations. No one else was punished.
It's more than just carelessness. In April, a whistle-blower reported that when DOGE took over National Labor Relations Board computers that have confidential data about workers and businesses, DOGE turned off security features like multi-factor authentication and disabled logs so their actions wouldn't be recorded. Within 15 minutes, Russian IP addresses began attempting to log in. They were using correct usernames and passwords.
Meanwhile the Trump Administration is cutting counterintelligence resources at the FBI, CIA, and NSA, and redirecting FBI agents to focus on immigration and other domestic issues. This means that if countries like Russia or China hack our government systems, access top secret information about our military, or steal Americans' confidential information, we might not catch it until it's too late.
